Letter Frequency
Definition
Letter frequency describes the statistical distribution of letters across the answer list. It has two dimensions: overall frequency (E is most common) and positional frequency (S often starts words; Y often ends them).
Why it matters
Frequency tells you which letters to test first and where to place them, directly increasing the value of each guess.
Examples
- E, A, R, O, T, L are among the most common letters.
- Y appears at the end far more often than elsewhere.
Best practices
- Prioritise high-frequency letters early.
- Place tested letters in their most common positions.
Frequently asked
Does frequency change between word lists?
Slightly. The exact ranking depends on the answer list, but the top letters are stable across English five-letter words.
